- Alum, Iron, and Copper are the most ancient and common mordants. Mordanting helps fibers to make chemical bonds with dyes and improves the wash fastness and lightfastness of natural dyes. For a long time, the 3 mordants included in this set have been used to mordant wool, silk, linen, cotton, hemp, and many other fibers.
- Cream of tartar is used when mordanting wool - it helps to keep it soft. Also, it is useful if your water has lots of iron and it will help to achieve bright, brilliant colors.
- Soda ash and Citric acid are additives used to change pH of your dye vat. A pinch of soda ash (alkaline) or citric acid (acid) can make a great impact on the final color!
- Myrobalan is a source of tannin that can be used as an organic mordant or as a base for other colors. Also it can be used for a 2-step cellulose mordanting process.
